Welcome to the Explorations Program! You may not realize it, but many of the people on this campus - including your introductory biology professors - are engaged in cutting-edge research in the biological sciences. This program was the brainchild of Dr. Jeffrey Kidder, who founded it in 1991 as an effort to introduce biology majors to the world of biological research early in their undergraduate careers. It is your opportunity to learn about the many different types and styles of biological research at Cornell, and could lead you to discover an interest in a field you didn't even know existed, to start an undergraduate research project, or even to change your major and pursue a new career path. This booklet is your starting-point.
As you read through the booklet, you will notice that it lacks any formal structure. There is no index, no table of contents, and programs are not grouped into broad categories such as Genetics or Physiology. This is deliberate. We want you to read the booklet, and in the process learn about the huge variety of biological research going on at Cornell. We would also like you to choose programs because they strike your fancy, not because they fit your career plan. The point is to explore and discover new areas of biology, and hopefully, to enjoy yourself doing it.
You are required to attend one program during each semester you are enrolled in BioG; attendance will count as a percentage of your lecture course grade (see your lecture handout for details). Registration for Explorations is electronic, and requires you to choose your favorite program from this booklet. Programs will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis. It is to your advantage to register early, since it improves the chance that you will be placed in one of your top choices. A calendar listing the times and dates of each program will be distributed separately - make certain all the programs you choose fit your schedule! And remember to have fun!
