Forest Patterns in the Northern Allegheny Plateau
Tim Fahey
Ecologists try to explain the patterns of distribution and abundance of organisms in the environment. We will examine some of the patterns of distribution of forest trees in the landscape around Ithaca on the northern Allegheny Plateau. These patterns are influenced by natural factors like geology and soils, as well as the effects of human activities. The forests we see today are changing as a result of the effects of native and exotic pathogens, and in the future probably climatic change, as well. We will consider how forest ecologists address questions about the factors controlling tree distribution and abundance, and we will explore some of the techniques they use.
