Tree-Rings and Archaeology
Sturt Manning
We will show how the measurement and analysis of annual growth-increments (="tree-rings") in oaks, pines, and junipers allows us to date the structures or archaeological strata in which they are found – sometimes to the very year in which the wood was cut. The technique (dendrochronology) has an applicability as far back as the Neolithic (about 9000 years ago). The tree-rings can also reveal evidence about past climate and environment.
