Up Close and Personal: Observing the World through Illustration
Marcia Eames-Sheavly

Scientific illustration communicates information visually. It shows viewers pieces of the world that are reproducible, factual and beautiful. But, before you begin drawing, you first must “learn to see.” Keen observation is a cornerstone of both science and art!

In this exploration, you will try exciting approaches to drawing designed to help you observe the world in new ways. You will learn to use techniques such as pencil, pen, and charcoal to convey information. Most importantly, the exploration will focus on seeing — really seeing — your subject before you render it on paper. Our primary subject matter will be plants, but you can use the techniques you learn in any field of study. No previous drawing experience is necessary.

Participants must come with an open mind, willing to try some drawing techniques that may seem quite strange at first! The session will be set up to get started in the lab, and then you will have the opportunity to take drawing boards into the greenhouse. We will talk about challenges you encountered, as well as what worked for you, at the end of the session.
