CSI for Animals - Diagnostic Pathology as a Medical Specialty: Demonstration of Animal Autopsy (necropsy)
Donald Schlafer

Pathology is considered to be the foundation of medicine. It is the study of changes in organs and tissues that yield insight into the causes, mechanisms, and clinical consequences of disease.

In this Explorations Program, a veterinary postmortem examination will be demonstrated. Additionally, diseased organs obtained at necropsy (animal autopsy) from a variety of species will be presented and discussed from the perspective of keys to diagnosis, disease mechanisms that are in play, ancillary testing, implications for health of other animals and humans, etc. Interested students will have an opportunity to examine selected specimens.
